چکیده

The importance of tectonics and fluid flow in controlling cold seep habitats has long been appreciated at convergent margins but remains poorly understood in strike-slip systems. Here we present geophysical, geochemical, and biological data from an activemethane seep offshore fromDelMar, California, in the inner California borderlands (ICB). The location of this seep appears controlled by localized transpression associated with a step in the San Diego Trough fault zone and provides an opportunity to examine the interplay between fluid expulsion and restraining step overs along strike-slip fault systems. These segment boundaries may have important controls on seep locations in the ICB and other margins characterized by strike-slip faulting (e.g., Greece, Sea of Marmara, and Caribbean). The strike-slip fault systems offshore southern California appear to have a limited distribution of seep sites compared to a wider distribution at convergent plate boundaries, which may influence seep habitat diversity and connectivity.

Activity of the Offshore Newport–Inglewood Rose Canyon Fault Zone, Coastal Southern California, from Relocated Microseismicity

An offshore zone of faulting approximately 10 km from the southern California coast connects the seismically active strike-slip Newport–Inglewood fault zone in the Los Angeles metropolitan region with the active Rose Canyon fault zone in the San Diego area. Relatively little seismicity has been recorded along the offshore Newport–Inglewood Rose Canyon fault zone, although it has long been suspe...

Kinematics of Transpressional Deformation Zones in the Urmia Fault Zone, Northwest Iran

Metamorphic and various intrusive rocks in the Urmia area are located in a transpressed active continental margin. These complexes in the Zagros orogen were deformed during an oblique convergence scenario between the Arabian and Sanandaj–Sirjan blocks in NW Iran. The Urmia area contains both NW-SE striking dextral strike-slip and SW verging NE dipping ductile reverse shear fabrics. Ductile shea...

3D stochastic rock fracture modeling related to strike-slip faults

Fault zones and fault-related fracture systems control the mechanical behaviors and fluid-flow properties of the Earth’s crust. Furthermore, nowadays, modeling is being increasingly used in order to understand the behavior of rock masses, and to determine their characteristics. In this work, fault zones and fracture patterns are reviewed, and also comprehensive studies are carried out on the fr...

Plate Boundary Segmentation by Stress Directions: Southern San Andreas fault, California

We propose a new method for defining segmentation of plate boundaries and faults, based on the directions of the stress tensor. Estimates for these directions are obtained by minimizing the average misfit between the theoretical and observed slip directions on fault planes of earthquake focal mechanisms. The misfit, f, for an individual earthquake is the parameter we use for defining the segmen...

Stratigraphic record of Pleistocene initiation and slip on the Coyote Creek fault, Lower Coyote Creek, southern California

The Coyote Creek fault is a major strand of the San Jacinto fault zone in southern California. Pleistocene sediments and sedimentary rocks exposed in the lower Coyote Creek area preserve a record of surface deformation, stream reorganization, and erosion that resulted from initiation and slip on the Coyote Badlands strand of the Coyote Creek fault. A well-exposed section of conglomerate and san...
